The A-2 jacket was adopted as the successor to the US Navy's N-1 deck jacket. Compared to the N-1, the outer fabric has been changed from cotton grosgrain to back satin, and the lining has been changed from alpaca wool to nylon boa.
The basic details such as the front fly closure with buttons and zippers and the ribs built into the cuffs are inherited from the N-1, but the collar has been changed, and chest pockets and hem adjusters have been added. This is a utility jacket typical of the US Navy.

This is an early model with a characteristic triangular flap.
